South Cotswold Partnership Conference Success - Thursday 9 July

Thursday 9 July saw the SCP hold its first conference, where staff involved in the all aspects of the partnership were invited.  Delegates heard of the tremendous growth the partnership had seen since its conception in 2004.  Some 150 pupils from six partner institutions are involved in collative courses at either level 1 or level 2, ranging from NVQ I in Beauty Therapy to BTEC First Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment.

Conference heard about the challenges and opportunities the partnership faces due to curriculum change and including the introduction of Diplomas and the Foundation Learning Tier.  With the introduction of the Creative & Media diploma in September 2009 to a post 16 cohort, the partnership is taking it first steps in delivering this new qualification.  Conference heard the plan was to introduce this to pre 16 learners in 2009, with the Construction & Built Environment diploma being introduced in 2011.

The partnership is busy making preparations to submit a further 3 Gateway bids in 2009 in Society, Health & Development, Sport and Active Leisure and Environmental and Land Based.  Work groups are working tirelessly to engage employers to help deliver the diplomas.

Over the past few months we have been reviewing the operational procedures including Assessment & Reporting and Rewards.  It was reported that as well as major changes to the fore mentioned, a working group to look at discipline will also be established to review current practice.

Quality assurance and self assessment are critical in order improve our provision.  The partnership has undertaken a self review and the initial results of this were fed back to delegates.  It was pleasing to hear that on whole the partnership has come out as being ‘Good’ overall.

Delegates were asked to identify their priorities for the next 12 months and what the partnership could do to support the delivery of courses to ensure success.  These will be posted on the web site at a later date.

Next years conference will be held on Tuesday 22 June 2010.  Further details will be sent out after Easter.

Building Their Future with Redrow

On Tuesday 14th October a party of students from the South Cotswold Partnership, a consortium made up from Deer Park; Kingshill; Farmor’s and Sir William Romney Schools, enjoyed a site visit to the Redrow plc. development on the outskirts of Cirencester. After a Health and Safety video and kitted out in safety boots, high visibility jackets and helmets, the students had a conducted tour of the site including viewing the show houses and the results of work done prior to excavating for roads, drainage and foundations. The highlight of the visit was a demonstration of bricklaying from a real craftsman who was able to pass on many handy tips.

The students are in the first year of a BTEC First Diploma: Construction and the Built Environment course and are fortunate to have the expertise of Redrow plc. helping with their studies and in the future will be enjoying classroom visits from representatives of many of the trades and professions in the building industry. They have been invited to visit Redrow's development in Bristol later in the year where they will be able to see all the trades at work and have the opportunity to find out more about careers in the industry.

Hairdressing for Young People launched across the South Cotswolds
January 2008

The South Cotswolds Partnership, a collection of education establishments, has joined forces with I-SA Training to provide Young Apprenticeship opportunities in Hairdressing to pupils across the South Cotswolds.  A leader in their field and renowned for high quality training in hairdressing, the Partnership is pleased to welcome I-SA Training as an Educational Partner.

From September 2008, there will be 15 places for Year 10 pupils on the Young Apprenticeship programme who wish to study hairdressing.  Young Apprenticeships are a new way for pupils to learn about jobs they are interested in, gaining work experience and developing practical skills without giving up academic qualifications.

They are designed to give pupils a feel and understanding of the workplace whilst working towards a vocational qualification and bringing together many of the things pupils are studying in their other GCSEs.

Pupils will spend two days a week studying towards their Young Apprenticeship, with the other three days back in school.  Pupils will spend a significant amount of time in a eral salon environment, putting into practice what they have learnt in the classroom.

Chris Germaine, South Cotswold Partnership Coordinator, said ‘What really makes the Young Apprenticeship programme appealing is the fact the pupils are learning in the workplace and develop their skills in a salon.  The programme is worth 5 GCSEs at A* to C and the progression routes are broad and balanced at the end of Year 11, which is really important to the pupils.’

"I-SA Training are already delivering Young Apprenticeships in Gloucestershire and are pleased to expand provision with the South Cotswolds Partnership.  Employer involvement is key to learner success and salon owners welcome the opportunity to support young people at this early stage in their hairdressing career.  Learners who achieve the Young Apprenticeship in Hairdressing will be in a position to make an informed career choice and will be more appealing to salon owners and other employers due to the vocational nature of the programme" said Cheryl Pearcey, Operations Manager for Education, I-SA Training.

The places are fully funded by the Learning and Skills Council, as part of the Government’s drive to make more applied and skills based routes available to young people.  The Young Apprenticeship in Hairdressing is also approved by Habia which is the government approved standards setting body for hair, beauty, nails, spa therapy, barbering and African-Caribbean hair.  The Young Apprenticeship programme in Hairdressing, complements the other courses offered across the partnership.

Gloucestershire Area Prospectus

The South Cotswold Partnership is pleased to support the recent launch of Moving Up Gloucestershire web site to support young peoples progression to choices at 14 and 16.  The web site www.movingupgloucestershire.com will enable young people to search the various providers to establish the learning opportunities within each partnership area under a County Prospectus.  This Prospectus will become more powerful in future years as the Diplomas are rolled out across the County.  The Partnership encourages young people to use the prospectus in collaboration with other services in their schools and colleges to guide their choice when it comes to making the important decisions when choosing subjects to study read full statement from Connexions

Note to editors

The South Cotswold Partnership grew to its present membership in 2005, from The Cirencester Partnership, which was established in 2003.  Partner members work closely together to create opportunities for the young people of the South Cotswolds.  The Partnership is working on numerous projects, such as creating a flexible, personalise curriculum to ensure young people are able to carry on in education, where one school cannot offer particular courses on their own.  We currently offer 6 such programmes that are available to pupils across the partnership.
