Why should I study this subject?

• This is an introduction to the Early Years sector for those people who may want to work with children or may be motivated by a child focussed syllabus.
• Assessment is straightforward and pupil friendly.

How will I Learn?

You are taught through a series of pupil friendly, motivational and interesting tasks which are assessed and moderated by the centre. Some students’ work will be sent for and moderated by CACHE. The lessons will be very practical and the resources available in the student handbook and textbook are excellent materials for supporting study. Sometimes staff members or their families bring in their babies and toddlers for you to do observations and ask questions.

The units covered are:

• Personal Development.
Your role as a member of the community. How to prepare for work and work with and for others. Preparing an action plan for                  your future.

• Human Growth and Development from Birth to Old Age.
The sequence, and factors affecting a persons mental and physical growth. How to meet the changing needs of children.

• Food and Nutrition.
What is a balanced diet? How nutritional needs change, how other factors affect diet, and you will get to prepare meals for children, make bottles up, etc.

• Health and Safety Practices in Home Group Settings.
Personal hygiene, how to store food correctly, prevent infections spreading and how to ensure a safe environment.

• Care of Children.
Basic needs of children of different ages, including keeping children clean and appropriately dressed, making sure children    feel safe and secure, understanding routines etc.

• Play and Practical Activities.
This one is fun, as you get to play and make things! How development and appropriate toys are important, what makes a good toy, how different toys meet different needs.

• Orientation to work.
Programme. The basic skills of working with children. How to work in a child care setting, and how to plan your career.

What about Work Experience?

There is no requirement for work experience on this course. However we do offer students the opportunity to go out to local nurseries and playgroups to do observations, investigations and get some ‘hands on’ experience working with children.

How will I be Assessed?

You will be assessed in a variety of ways, depending on the unit you are studying. The assessment methods include preparing healthy meals for children, personal action plans, creating information leaflets and displays.

There is a short answer test paper, at the end of the programme.

What will I get at the end of the course?

Overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction.
This qualification is equivalent to 3 GCSE grades D to G.

What will I be able to do with this Qualification?

This award will equip suitable candidates to progress to appropriate Level 2 qualifications such as the Certificate in Childcare and Education (available at Cirencester College) or the NVQ in Early Years Care and Education.

PUPIL PROFILE

Verity is currently in Year 10 and is studying geography and German as well as Early Years Care. Verity chose this course because she has two young cousins she enjoys being with, and likes ‘what children do and how they do it.’

This course will be useful because ‘It will advance my skills in Early Years Care and as it’s a foundation course, I can go on to study the subject at a higher level’.

Even if Verity does not go into childcare she is learning life skills for when she has her own children.

Verity has enjoyed the practical cooking sessions, (and eating what she has prepared!) and also the discussions about catering and caring for young children.

She is looking forward to having a ‘virtual baby’ and visiting local nurseries.
Verity says this course is different to more traditional options because it is interesting meeting people from other schools. She said ‘Everyone is really nice, friendly and funny.’

She plans to possibly go into professional childcare in the future and would like to run her own nursery.
