Why Study Land and Environment?

The BTEC Introductory Certificate and Diploma qualifications in Land and Environment are designed to develop a range of real employability skills and techniques, understanding, personal qualities and attitudes essential for success in a working life in the countryside. Specialised units which are directly relevant to land and environment sectors, such as estate skills and conservation, are studied in a practical, stimulating and interesting way. If you like the countryside and would like to work outdoors this could be the course for you. During the course you will follow the EDEXCEL BTEC Introductory Certificate and if capable Diploma. The course will be based at Cirencester College within the Heritage Academy.

The modules studied are:
1. Starting Work in Land Based Industries.
This gives you a good grounding in what career options are available in the Land based sector.
2. Working Safely in Land Based Industries.
Investigating responsibility in work and learning all about Health & Safety regulations and good practice.
3. Personal Effectiveness.
Build a portfolio of skills which will help make you more employable.
4. The Environment.
You will learn how the environment works and how we profit  from its fruits and conserve it for the future.
5. Practical Estate Skills.
Develop skills with hand tools and learn essential craft techniques for a working life on the land.
6. Horticulture.
How to look after plants and understand their needs. This unit will provide you with key skills in plant care.
7. Land and Environment Conservation.
Learn how to identify habitats and assess them. Explore the relationships between plants and animals.

How Will I Learn?

Students learn a range of skills which relate to practical, personal and vocational needs through a variety of units taught in both the classroom and outdoors. These self contained modules cover different aspects of Land and Environment from working safely and developing skills, to understanding the environment, landscape, plants and animals. As well as the practical side you will also build a catalogue of evidence to back up your practical experience.

How Will I Be Assessed?

The Diploma is built around 360 hours of study and offers a broad overview of working in the countryside. The Certificate is a more introductory course which only requires 180 hours of study. Neither course has an exam – both are constantly assessed via assignments which are completed throughout the course to meet set criteria.

What will I get at the end of the course?

You will achieve either a Certificate or depending on your progress and the number of modules completed a Diploma.
This is equivalent to either 2 or 4 GCSE’s and is a nationally recognised qualification.

What will I be able to do with my BTEC?

These courses provide a nationally recognised qualification which can act as a stepping stone into employment in the land and environment industries where some previous experience is often necessary to gain initial employment. The courses also provide a suitable qualification for learners to progress on to a range of further study at Levels 1 and 2.
