What are they?

Young Apprenticeships (YAs) are a new way for pupils to learn about jobs they are interested in, gain work experience and develop practical skills without giving up your academic qualifications.
They are designed to give pupils a feel and understanding of the workplace whilst working towards a vocational qualification and bringing together many of the things you are studying in your other GCSE’s.

How they work

You will continue to learn English, Maths, Science and ICT possibly with other GCSE’s for three days a week. You will spend two days a week on the YA programme studying for a level 2 qualification with I-SA Training.

Why Hairdressing?

British hairdressing is regarded as the most professional and most creative in the world. It has some of the highest standards and a training and education system that is copied throughout the world. It requires hard work and dedication and is a professional career with a clear progression route from salon junior to salon owner or manager.
Today’s hairdressers need to put in years of study and work to reach the high level of technical skills that are expected by salon owners and managers. Skills needed include communication and flexibility as well as excellent administration and business skills.
During the programme you will follow the Level 2 Diploma in Ladies Hairdressing. The programme will be based initially at school to prepare for the work place with work placements beginning after Christmas in Year 10.
You will be accredited with individual unit certificates and an overall certification if all 9 units are completed.
• Working in Hairdressing
• Style and Dress Women’s hair
• Maintain Health and Safety in the Salon
• Perm and Neutralise Hair
• Client Consultation for Hairdressing Services
• Hairdressing Design Skills
• Shampoo and Condition the Hair and Scalp
• Colour Hair
• Cut Women’s Hair

The programme is a highly practical one that will challenge your ability to work as part of a team in a very different environment. You will need to complete a portfolio to show your capability, skills and knowledge.
On completion of both the Diploma and the minimum 50 days work experience you will be awarded the Young Apprenticeship Award.

How will I learn?

You will start the programme at the school and once sufficient knowledge and skills have been learned you will be placed in a local salon at least one day a week.
Theory will be taught at school with some practical skills and demonstrations. Most of the practical work will take place whilst on work experience in the workplace.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed throughout the programme through practical observations, answers to written questions and through set assignments. Each unit has research activities and assignments to complete. There is one online test taken towards the end of the course.

What will I get at the end of the programme?

You will gain a Level 2 Diploma in Ladies Hairdressing and also a certificate from HABIA, awarding you with the Young Apprenticeship. This is equivalent to 5 GCSE’s A* to C.

What can I do once I have completed this programme?

This is a nationally recognised qualification that is understood by employers and colleges. Apart from the experience and a hairdressing qualification, you will be in a much better position to make an informed choice on what to do at 16.
Once awarded the Young Apprenticeship you could continue into employment and go on to be ‘fast tracked’ on a full Apprenticeship programme with an employer. You will have gained the equivalent of 5 GCSE’s once you have completed the YA programme. You may decide to continue in school or FE College to continue your studies.

Entrance requirements

You will have to complete an application form, take an aptitude test, complete an assignment and there will be a selection procedure including an interview with the school and I-SA training, who are industry specialists.
