Why Beauty Therapy?

The Beauty Industry is currently one of the fastest paced industries in the world and the long term career prospects are excellent.

Currently there are thousands of job vacancies for fully qualified therapists. Whether you want to work locally, elsewhere in the UK, or abroad.

There are many exciting choices for you including performing treatments whilst sailing the seas on a cruise liner!  This is an exciting industry to be part of and you will always be learning something new.

To succeed you will need to study hard, NVQ level 1 is the starting point. This course is comprised of a number of units, which are as follows:
1.  Health and Safety
2.  Reception
3.  Setting up the work area
4.  Provide Mini Facials
5.  Provide Mini Manicures

How Will I Learn?

You will learn your practical treatments in the Beauty Salons at The Castle in Cecily Hill. Initially you will practice your treatment skills on your class mates and then make progress to being assessed working with external clients. You will learn how to perform facial and manicure treatments in line with the currently health and safety laws. Underpinning your practical work will be the required theory, which includes learning the anatomy & physiology of the hand and face and learning about risks and hazards in the salon. Throughout the course you will also work to assist the level 2 and level 3 therapists to gain an understanding of the way the salon operates.

How Will I be Assessed?

Assessments will take place continually throughout the course and will include practical tasks, beauty treatments and theory work. You will produce a portfolio of evidence containing all the work that you complete, and at the end of each unit you will be required to sit a short test.

What About Work Experience?

Throughout the course you will be working with paying clients in  salons which is very valuable work experience. All the work experience is carried out in the salons.

What will I get at the end of the Course?

You will achieve an NVQ Level 1 in Beauty Therapy, which is a vocational qualification equivalent to 3 GCSE’s

What will I be able to do with my certificate?

This qualification is nationally recognised and is understood by colleges and employers.
When you have completed your qualification this will give you the requirements to apply to study Level 2 programmes or gain employment as an assistant therapist in the industry.
Colleges you may wish to consider include Cirencester College, Gloucestershire College and Stroud College.

PUPIL PROFILE

Studying the NVQ 1 Beauty Therapy course over 2 years was a great time for me. I was able to learn different things that I would not do at school. Over the 2 years we learnt how to do manicures and facials we also saw level 2 and 3 students do their treatments.  I really liked going to college for 1 day a week because I was able to get fully involved in the running of the salon. The course gave me a clear direction as to what I wanted to do as a career choice. I am now studying NQV II at Cirencester College and work with some of the level 1 pupils - that was me last year.

I hope to do level 3 and then on to do hairdressing, before applying to work on a cruise ship or in a spa. Maybe one day I will have my own salon. If it was not for the school allowing me to follow a Partnership course, I would not be doing something I really love.

PUPIL PROFILE

I chose to do the course because I had always been interested in Beauty Therapy. This interest came from talking to my aunt who is a Beauty Therapist. I knew I was going to get a good grade in Beauty Therapy because I am good at practical work.
I thoroughly enjoyed my two years on the course as I learnt how to do treatments and got to know other pupils from other schools.
At the moment I am doing the level 2 Beauty Therapy at college. I have learnt new treatments already and we have worked on lots of clients in the salon.  I hope to go on to work for myself doing mobile treatments or work in a salon.
